Briton to run 100K for dementia charity
A British runner will attempt to run 100 kilometres across the island next week in a fundraising event for a Bermudian charity.
Adam Davis, from Buckinghamshire, England, plans to cover the distance on June 12 to raise funds for Action on Alzheimer's & Dementia.
Mr Davis told The Royal Gazette that he always wanted to contribute to charity.
He said that he will celebrate his 30th birthday this year and, for the milestone, he discussed the idea of the run with his partner, who lives in Bermuda.
Through her, he contacted AAD about the fundraiser.
He said: “My stepdad was staying in an end-of-life hospice before he passed away. The work they do there is amazing. So I decided to do this to raise money for them and also the charity in Bermuda.”
He added: “The charity in Bermuda does a lot of work like treatment and therapy for people living with Alzheimer’s, so I want to raise money for them.”
Mr Davis said an outline of the route would cover 102.7km (63.8 miles). Although he intends to stop for water along the way, he insisted: “I will keep it above 100km in reality.”
He will start the run at 5am on June 12 at Devonshire Bay Road and head west along South Road to Somerset, continuing on to Dockyard before turning around.
Mr Davis said he will then run along Middle Road to the City of Hamilton, along Front Street and continue on to Pitts Bay Road and North Shore Road.
He will head to St George’s, where he will turn around and run to St David’s before he heads back to his starting point in Devonshire.
When asked if he is physically prepared for the event, Mr Davis said that although he started running competitively two years ago, he has always kept in shape and has competed in several half-marathons.
He said the longest distance he has covered in a single day was a 72km run.
Mr Davis said: “I ran a few half-marathons, and in the training for this event, I did a marathon earlier this year.”
He added that several fans and well-wishers planned to run alongside him on sections of the route.
Mr Davis said: “We’ve got a few people who will join us. But yes, if people want to join for five-kilometre or ten-kilometre stints, that would be fun. The more the merrier.”
He added: “I’ve run several hundred kilometres per week. I’ve run several over a weekend, so it’s just about getting it done now.
“It’s more mental than physical.”
