Festival planned for Filipino independence celebrations

Residents can expect a variety of attractions when a festival to mark the 126th anniversary of independence for the Philippines is held at Victoria Park this month.

The event will run from noon to 6pm on June 23.

It will be held under the theme “Pyestang Pinoy”, which translates to “Filipino Feast”.

Ryan De Jesus, the president of the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda, said preparations for the event started in March.

He said: “Everything is going smoothly. We can’t wait to execute the plans on the day of the event.”

He said the festival will showcase the culture of the Philippines and will include song and dance performances, accompanied by “Original Pilipino Music”.

Mr De Jesus added: “OPM refers to Philippine pop songs, particularly ballads, which are usually sung in our native languages, most often Tagalog but with Western music conventions and style.”

He said some groups — where members’ ages range from 8 to 65 — will perform different cultural dances that are famous in different parts of the Philippines.

Stalls will offer Filipino food and drinks at the event.

Mr De Jesus said the organisers have prepared traditional games that can be played by children and adults at the festival.

He added: “I’m excited about this part because it will surely be nostalgic to do, and personally I want young generations to experience these native games and put aside, for a while, their gadgets.”

Mr De Jesus said this year’s event is expected to be “bigger than the past years”.

He added: “This event is open to the Bermuda public; thus everyone on this beautiful island is invited to celebrate with us.

“There will be performances throughout the event.”

The $10 ticket for the event will also serve as entry to a raffle, where prizes include a scooter, travel vouchers, brunch and dinner for two as well as gift certificates.

Mr De Jesus said ticket purchases will raise funds for the charity’s expenses, although money raised at the event will be shared with the Salvation Army.
