Theatre workshop series to highlight Generation Alpha

Pupils aged 8 to 18 were encouraged to take part in theatre workshops that will explore the outlook of young people this summer.

Patricia Pogson-Nesbitt, the chief executive and artistic director at Noire Theatre Company, said the sessions will highlight the experiences of Generation Alpha — people born between 2010 and 2025.

She explained: “Generation Alpha are the ones that don’t know life without technology.

“One of the things I’ve noticed for myself is that because our young people have faced some trauma with Covid, life was not normal for about two years and they were forced to go home into environments that were not healthy.

“Even today, when I look at people walking around, everybody is on their phone and has their head down when they’re walking … I wanted to have some sort of understanding about what their world looks like and explore that.”

Ms Pogson-Nesbitt, a former teacher at CedarBridge Academy, added that the students should have self-awareness and an idea of the programme’s objectives when they audition.

She said: “This is not a summer camp where you go and play games and go to the beach. It’s a very specified camp with intentions, it has outcomes.”

These include working as a team towards a common goal, providing opportunities in communication and developing skills in areas of theatre and film-making.

Unlike Noire Youth Theatre workshops in previous years, which culminated in stage performances, cinematography intern Dequan Trott will film the participants’ pieces this year.

Students will also receive guidance from assistant director Maya Peart and movement and sound director Dezjuan Thomas. Tiffany Smith will run the programme’s social media.

Workshop auditions will take place at the Bermuda Union of Teachers base on Church Street tomorrow and on June 14 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, and on June 15 from 1pm to 3pm.

Workshops will be held at the BUT from 9am to 3pm, beginning on July 1 and ending on August 23. They cost $200 a week or $175 weekly for the entire programme.

Participants must register and take part in workshops for at least four weeks, but do not have to attend consecutive weeks.
