Public invited to nominate new National Hero
Members of the public will be asked to nominate another National Hero this year to add to the eight existing “trailblazing Bermudians who have made immense contributions” to the island.
The Government made the announcement ahead of today’s National Heroes Day celebrations.
A government spokeswoman said nominations will open in October. Under the mandate, the process is open to the public to submit nominations once every ten years.
Owen Darrell, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, described today’s public holiday as a time of reflection.
He said last night: “We are proud to celebrate the achievements of our National Heroes as many will be encouraged to reflect on the history and contributions of eight exceptional Bermudians.
“Their legacies have had a lasting impact on the cultural, political and business landscape of our island inspiring generations of people.
“Whether spending time with family and loved ones, participating in the Carnival in Bermuda Parade of Bands event, or quietly reflecting on the lives of our National Heroes today, I encourage everyone to have a safe holiday weekend.”
Mr Darrell will be a guest today at the 80th annual Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race.
