Organisation donates more than $17,000 to two charities

Two charities received a financial boost from the Meet-a-Mum Association of Bermuda to undertake their social programmes.

Mama said the sum of $17,241 will be split equally between The Foster Parents Association and It Takes a Village following a decision by its membership at its annual meeting on May 2.

Lindsay Simmons, the president of The Foster Parents Association, said: “The Mama group's generosity has had a profound impact on the association, providing a significant financial boost of support over the past year.”

The FPA’s mandate is to empower foster care providers to give the best possible service to the island’s foster children.

It provides supplemental financial support for those situations outside the normal scope of fostering.

Fiona Dill, the executive director and founder of It Takes a Village, said the foundation was “grateful to the Mama organisation for its generous donation to our work”.

She added: “Our stated mission is to empower vulnerable pregnant women in Bermuda through comprehensive childbirth education, supportive community birth and post-partum doula services including lactation support and a nutrition and voucher programme fostering a healthy and informed start to parenthood.

“These funds will go towards making sure that these programmes are possible.”

As part of its mandate, Mama provides information, activities, events and contacts to support and inform parents and caregivers of young children in Bermuda.

The organisation said the each year its membership community “raises money for other worthwhile family charities on the island via various fundraising events”.

The activities include its popular “Touch a Truck” event that is held at Bernard Park annually.
