Family Centre has provided an extensive list of support services and resources it can offer to families affected by recent tragedies on the island.

In response to the recent deaths of several members of the community, including two children, the charity said it stood ready to provide critical support to families, children and teenagers grappling with grief and loss.

A spokeswoman said: “Our dedicated team is here to help the community navigate through this challenging time.

“Family Centre offers a safe space where children and teens can express their feelings and process their grief.

“We are here to facilitate healing, hope and connection within our community.”

Family Centre services

Counselling services: Our trained therapists provide individual and family counselling to help children between the ages of 4 to 18 and their parents cope with their emotions and adjust to their losses.

Grief management: We guide parents in discussing tragic events with their children, providing age-appropriate explanations and addressing their fears and anxieties.

Resources for parents: To support parents in helping their children and teens through grief, we offer the following tips:

Encourage expression: Allow children and teens to express their feelings through words, drawings, play or physical activities.

Memorial activities: We encourage activities such as creating memory boards, drawing, writing letters and participating in group memorial projects to honour those who have passed.

Be honest: Use clear and simple language about deaths to avoid confusion.

Maintain routine: Keeping a consistent daily routine can provide a sense of normalcy and security.

Seek professional help: If grief is overwhelming and persistently impairing daily functioning for a child or teen, our professional counsellors are available to provide therapeutic support.

Long-term support: Grief can resurface at various stages of a child's or teen’s development. Family Centre remains committed to offering continuous support, ensuring that families receive the help they need over time.
