Sunshine and fun at Victoria Park

Hundreds of revellers soaked up the sunshine in Victoria Park this afternoon when the City of Hamilton hosted its Summer Sunday City Funday.

The park was transformed into a fun fair featuring bouncy castles, assault courses and traditional games such as corn hole and knock down.

A City of Hamilton spokeswoman said the event promised to deliver “an exhilarating celebration of community and fun, cultivating memories that will last a lifetime”.

In soaring temperatures, drinks vendors did a roaring trade while water slides proved popular with younger participants.

“It’s just a great day out, something different and something for all the family to enjoy,” said Donna Simmons, who was at the park with her two daughters.

Although themed as a “family event’, there was plenty of entertainment for adults.

DJ Mystro kept the atmosphere pumping with music from the bandstand, and there were also live performances from the Tino Martinez Quartet, H&H Gombeys and DIA.

Ed Christopher, the town crier, and Patrina “Power Girl” O’Connor, acted as MCs.

Among the highlights of the afternoon were pie and hot dog-eating competitions.

Another popular attraction was the ducking school, in which a number of local celebrities got a welcome soaking.
