A businessman and his colleagues have set out on a fundraising drive through a weekly, free movie night to boost the image of a playground in Pembroke.

Alfred Butterfield, who runs Jazzy Treats, a mobile eatery, said the project aims to bring the community together.

Mr Butterfield said that at the end of summer, the funds raised would go towards upgrading the playground with the purchase of benches, slides and other items to improve the recreational space.

Several other businesses have backed the scheme, Mr Butterfield said.

The first movie night went ahead on June 15 and, according to Mr Butterfield, “the turnout was amazing”.

He added: “People have been coming out, other businesses have been supporting it, so we are getting everyone involved.”

The event, which is hosted every Friday, received a boost recently when several local talents performed live song and dance acts at the playground.

The performers included the H&H Gombeys, the E- Level dance group and the singer Ponaflex.

Mr Butterfield said: “So we are also highlighting local talent as well.

“It is about bringing awareness to the community and to upgrade the facilities here at the playground”.

Meanwhile, Mr Butterfield noted that David Burt, the Premier, had promised his support with a donation.

He said the Premier promised to match the funds raised by the organisers at the end of summer.
