Record-setting mega marlin also lands tournament prize
A Bermudian fishing team is toasting its success, along with a formidable cash win, at the Bermuda Big Game Classic after landing a whopping blue marlin.
The 1,268lb fish, the third-heaviest taken in Bermuda’s waters, was reeled in on Monday by Edward Carreiro on board UnWined, a 36ft Luhrs craft, with captain Chris Osborne.
Marlin magazine said the team battled for five hours to secure the fish, which was 145in long as measured to the lower jaw, with a girth of 59.5in.
Adding to the achievement was the vessel’s lack of the Omni Solar system, which is used to pinpoint large game fish from several thousand feet.
The magazine reported that the chase began when the anglers hooked three blue marlin shortly after noon, and opted to stay with the big one, ultimately towing it back to port.
The other two were released, as part of the catch-and-release element of the tournament.
Aside from securing a place in Bermuda’s fishing history, the team took in a $190,666 prize that positions them favourably for the final jackpot for the tournament’s biggest catch.
The Big Game Classic, a highlight of the Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship, began on Sunday and continues through today.
