Cup Match Extravaganza in St George draws crowds
The Corporation of St George hosted a celebratory event ahead of this year’s Cup Match.
It partnered with the Chamber of Commerce to host the event on Friday in King’s Square.
A statement from the corporation said Cup Match was a “celebration of a significant period in Bermuda’s past, one that continues to shape the island today”.
Quinell Francis, the Mayor of St George, explained: “Restating the season for the holiday is important as the younger generation associates it with the cricket match, camping, and four days of activity.
“However, the purpose of the celebration is fundamental because without the change in law in 1834, a large majority of the Bermudian population would not have been allowed to do any of this.”
She added: “As an historic town, our community's role is to acknowledge our past and celebrate the milestones that connect us as a community, hence the lead-up celebration to the Cup Match holiday weekend."
