David Burt paid tribute to a “Bermudian patriarch and a man of true distinction” after the death of veteran newspaper worker Lefroy Brownlow Place on the eve of his 108th birthday.

The Premier added: “When I reflect on all that he witnessed in such a remarkable life, it is mind-boggling.”

Mr Burt noted that Mr Place was born while the First World War still raged on European battlefields, and a mere four years after the Titanic disaster.

He said Mr Place “embraced all that life offered, and was a man of deep convictions and unshakeable faith”.

“It was a blessing to have spent time with him and his family to whom he was so precious.

“We are on the cusp of a Cup Match Classic in Somerset and it is perhaps fitting that he transitions at a time of year that he loved and celebrated over generations.”

Mr Burt added: “On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda as well as my family, we express our sincerest condolences to his daughter, Charlene, and the entire Place family.

“Mr Place was a unique and wonderfully genuine man who was never defined solely by his age, but by the incredible life and example he lived. May he rest in peace.”

Mr Place’s passing was marked with “deep sadness” by the City of Hamilton.

Mr Place, who worked for the City for decades, was “a man of great honour and dedication whose service made a significant impact on the City of Hamilton”, a statement said.

“His unwavering commitment and contributions marked him as a pillar of our community, leaving a legacy defined by dignity, grace and compassion.”

Mr Place, who earlier in life ran the Bermuda Recorder newspaper alongside his father, A.B. Place, went on to enjoy a lengthy career for City Hall, with jobs including that of custodian and mail courier.

His service to Hamilton, which extended over 30 years, was defined by punctuality and his expression, “In life, you can’t afford to be late. You’d miss too much.”

The tribute added: “His early arrivals and dedication to his role were a testament to his strong work ethic and pride in his contributions to the City.

“He cherished the sense of community and the learning experiences his job offered.”

Mr Place was said to reflect often on “his fond memories at the corporation, especially the annual Christmas tree judging competition in the City Hall lobby — a highlight for him given his love for the holiday season”.

He retired in his eighties and “set a gold standard for all employees with his exemplary service and dedication”.

Dwayne Caines, the City chief executive, said: “Lefroy Place represented the highest ideals of service and excellence.

“His dedication and exceptional work have profoundly shaped our community.

“His legacy of integrity, hard work and community spirit will continue to inspire us all.”

Charles Gosling, the mayor, offered “heartfelt sympathies” to the family of Mr Place, along with the city councillors and the staff of the Corporation of Hamilton.
