A sports fishing boat came to the aid of a solo sailor who ran into difficulty south of Bermuda last week.

According to an incident report, RCC (Rescue Co-ordination Centre) Bermuda received an alert from a French-registered vessel about 30 miles southeast of the island at about 2.40pm last Friday.

A mayday was broadcast and the Somers Isles, which was passing Gibbs Hill Light House at the time, was diverted to the area.

Meanwhile, RCC Bermuda contacted search and rescue authorities in both the US and France and found that the emergency position-indicating radio beacon alert was linked to a 26ft sailboat Akory.

“The EPIRB had previously been activated on July 14,” the report said. “This alert was investigated by the United States Coast Guard who found a solo sailor on board, no assistance was required on that occasion.”

RCC Bermuda then reached out to Mama Seata, a sports fishing vessel that was off South Shore, and the crew agreed to venture to the distress position and investigate.

At about 4.30pm, the Mama Seata reached the Akory and found that the single sailor on board wanted to abandon the vessel.

“The skipper was taken on board Mama Seata and taken back to Bermuda, the yacht remained adrift,” the report concluded.
