Rotary clubs hold historic installation ceremony
A joint installation ceremony was held by the Rotary Clubs of Bermuda to welcome new leadership teams at the island’s four branches.
The event, held at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club on Friday, marked the first time in many decades that all four clubs came together for the occasion, marking the start of the new rotary year.
Antoine Lightbourne, a barrister and attorney, was installed as president of the Rotary Club of Sandys.
The clubs said Mr Lightbourne, who works in the Office of the Tax Commissioner, has a passion for community service.
He has served as a volunteer with the Mirrors Programme for more than ten years.
Cathy Bassett, a former educator, was installed as president of the Rotary Club of Hamilton.
Ms Bassett, who has been a Rotarian for almost 20 years, worked in the island’s public school system from 1982 as a teacher.
She served as deputy principal and principal of two primary schools
Shammara Simmons was installed as president of the Rotary Club of St George’s.
Ms Simmons, who is employed at EY Bermuda Ltd, became a Rotarian in 2018, when she served as an adviser for the Hamilton Interact Club.
She went on to become a member of the St George's Rotary Club in 2021.
Barbara Harris-Edwards was installed as president of the Rotary Club of Pembroke, where she has been a member since 2002.
She served the club in several capacities such as district governor in 2015 at Rotary District 7230.
At Friday’s event, Rotarians and other guests were treated to live entertainment from the Violin Sisters, Sari and Naphisa Smith, and Maurice Clarke, a saxophonist from the Bermuda School of Music.
The clubs jointly presented a token of appreciation to Traci Burgess, who recently moved on from the post of executive director of Keep Bermuda Beautiful.
The clubs said the presentation was made to Ms Burgess “in recognition of the strong and fruitful working relationship enjoyed between KBB and Rotary”.
The Rotary year runs from July 1 to June 30.
