Cup Match message from David Burt, the Premier:

Our Cup Match holiday is a time-honoured celebration of Bermuda’s unique culture and history.

This memorable two-day holiday brings us together to commemorate our heritage and enjoy the company of loved ones centred around the historic match and friendly rivalry between Somerset and St George's in the Cup Match Classic.

The anticipation for the match can be felt from east to west, with residents and businesses showing their allegiance to one side or another through vibrant displays of red and blue or blue and blue.

As we enjoy the celebrations, it is essential that we remember the foundation on which this holiday was formed.

Its roots lie in the abolition of slavery in Bermuda and the beginning of a new era of freedom after decades of oppression.

We must take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and struggles of our ancestors and take pride in the strength and resilience they showed in a time of immense inequality.

We remember the Black lodges and friendly societies that came together to begin this tradition, raising funds to purchase the first silver cup and bowling the first balls on the Royal Naval Field in Somerset and Garrison Field in St George’s.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the executives, selectors, coaches, players, staff and volunteers of both Somerset Cricket Club and St George's Cricket Club.

Your tireless efforts and countless hours of preparation make the Cup Match Classic possible.

Your dedication and commitment are the driving forces behind its success, and all of Bermuda thanks you for all that you do so that we can enjoy this special time of year.

My family and I look forward to joining in the festive atmosphere at the Somerset Cricket Club and throughout the island.

We extend our heartfelt wishes to all of Bermuda and those visiting our shores to participate in our culture.

We are excited to immerse ourselves in this joyous occasion alongside the entire community and hope you and your loved ones enjoy all the Cup Match holiday offers.

On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I extend our sincerest best wishes to both teams.

We eagerly await a match filled with moments of brilliance, sportsmanship and the spirit of healthy competition throughout.

Finally, I wish you all a happy Emancipation Day, happy Mary Prince Day, and a happy and safe Cup Match holiday.
