Bermudians in UK warned to stay cautious as riots rage

Bermudians in Britain have been warned to avoid trouble spots as far-Right violence surges across the country.

Xenophobic and anti-Muslim riots have spread across England and Northern Ireland over the past six days.

Mobs have destroyed property, harassed civilians and attacked police offers.

The Government of Bermuda’s London Office urged citizens to avoid known riot locations and not to engage with rioters to minimise risks to their personal safety.

It told them to follow reliable news sources to stay up to date on the unrest that has rocked the country.

Bermudians should follow advisories from local authorities and contact police immediately if they are in imminent danger.

They should also make sure their emergency contact numbers are readily available.

Finally, those in Britain should stay connected with other Bermudians and regularly check in with friends and family on the island.

A member of staff at the London Office said: “Please be assured that the Government of Bermuda London Office remains ready to support Bermudians in the UK with consular needs.

“If required, we encourage you to contact us directly via londonoffice@gov.bm.”

The unrest was sparked in response to a knife attack in which a 17-year-old boy killed three girls and injured ten others last week in Southport, a coastal town on Merseyside.

The alleged assailant was falsely accused of being a Muslim immigrant and an asylum seeker who arrived in Britain by boat.

Disorder tore through the city and spread to 23 other major areas across the country, including London, Manchester, Nottingham and Belfast.

More than 400 people have been arrested during the riots and four men have been jailed for their part in the unrest.

Stephen Parkinson, the UK’s Director of Public Prosecutions, warned yesterday that terrorism charges could be levelled at offenders.

Nevertheless, more than 100 far-Right demonstrations threatened to erupt across Britain yesterday, sparking 30 counter-protests.

Emergency services have deployed 4,000 riot police and are keeping another 2,200 on standby.
