Meals on Wheels deliveries resume after storm disruption

A charity that provides meals to vulnerable members of the community is back in action today after losing power as a result of Hurricane Ernesto.

Meals on Wheels suffered the power outage as well as flooding and a damaged generator, forcing it to suspend most of its services yesterday.

The charity was still able to deliver a small number of meals to those it identified as being in most urgent need, thanks to a donation of prepared food from the feeding programme at Christ Church Warwick.

Power has been restored and services are expected to be back to normal today but the repair or replacement of the generator was ongoing.

Jenn Osmond-Campbell, a volunteer at the charity, said: “We have electricians and plumbers coming to assess and check everything is safe.

“We do have some running water but the generator is a work in progress. We may need a replacement but are still looking at the situation.

"We were able to put together a few meals for today but we have a pretty good sense of those in the community who are in most need and don’t necessarily have the support from family or friends.“

Ms Osmond-Campbell thanked the media and those who helped to get the word out.

She added that the charity needed volunteers to help to prepare and deliver meals.

She said: “We are always looking for any assistance, especially in a volunteer capacity. We have 17 routes, four days a week and we need a driver for every route. We also use volunteers in the kitchen.

“It’s summer and a lot of people are away for prolonged periods. We struggle on a daily basis to fill those spots. Even one day a week to help in the kitchen or with driving helps and people can even just fill in periodically. If you sign up, you are not committed every week.”

Anyone wishing to assist the charity can go to the volunteer tab onwww.mealsonwheels.bm.
