Former BLDC headquarters eyed for staff dormitories
A government quango has sought permission to turn offices in Southside into a staff dormitory, providing rooms for up to 16 people.
A planning application submitted by the Bermuda Land Development Company earlier this year proposed a change of use for Triton House on Longfield Road.
However, the quango has been subsequently merged with West End Development Corporation to form the Bermuda Land Management Corporation.
The building was owned and operated by the BLDC, housing the quango’s main offices.
Documents included in the application said: “The existing building’s use is a commercial office use and BLDC would like to change the use to residential for a staff dormitory.
“This property’s change of use was previously converted from a residential building into the existing commercial-use building.”
The proposed design would convert the building’s ten offices into eight single bedrooms, each of which could house up to two people, along with two shared dining rooms.
The building would also have a lounge, male and female bathrooms, storage rooms, a reception area and two covered entries.
While the planning application did not include parking, it was stated that the BLDC intended guests and residents to use the bike and car spaces across the street at 26 Southside Road, formerly the Southside Supermarket.
