Rules reminder for charity tag days in Hamilton

City of Hamilton

The Corporation of Hamilton has reminded the public that timely requests must be made for scheduling tag day events within the city.

“Tag days provide an essential fundraising opportunity for local charities and the City of Hamilton is committed to ensuring a fair and well-regulated process,” the City said.

Dwayne Caines, the City’s chief executive officer, highlighted the importance of adhering to the guidelines.

He said: “Tag days are an essential fundraising opportunity for many of our local charities, and it's crucial that we manage them fairly and effectively.

“We encourage all charities to familiarise themselves with the guidelines and submit their applications on time to ensure their requests are considered.

“These efforts help maintain a balanced schedule for tag days and ensure the funds raised go where they are needed most.”

Tag day guidelines

The City of Hamilton’s guidelines for tag day applications are as follows:

1. Applicants must be well-established, bona fide registered charitable organisations, with a proven track record of the success of their work.

2. The charity in question must be involved with any one of the following areas:

•Children

•Health

•Seniors

•Animals

•Disabled (mental or physical)

•Environment

•International sports competition

•Abuses (drugs, alcohol, violence) and homelessness

3. Charities that receive regular, substantial subsidies from either the public or the private sector will still be considered, but not as a priority.

4. For charities requesting a tag day, that tag day should be an important and vital part of their annual fund raising.

5. Charities may be allocated one tag day in any one year (a maximum of two tag days can be scheduled in any one week).

6. Charities should provide a copy of their current charity certificate.

7. Successful applicants may not expect to be allocated a tag day more than twice in any five-year period, so long as the demand for tag days remains high.

8. So-called “unofficial” tag days, e.g. those that do not have permission from the Corporation to sell tags in the streets of the City, will be restricted to selling from inside a building only.

Selling tags from the sidewalks or streets will not be permitted.

Tag day requests, which will be confirmed in writing, must be made via e-mail to Maegan Tankard, the City’s executive assistant.
