Saltus and Warwick Academy remember 9/11 victims
Two schools maintained their yearly tribute yesterday to Bermudians who lost their lives in terrorist attacks 23 years ago.
Saltus Grammar School alumni Boyd Gatton and Robert Higley II, and Rhondelle Tankard, who attended Warwick Academy, were among the almost 3,000 people who perished in New York City, Washington and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, during the attacks on September 11, 2001.
A post on the Saltus Facebook page said the day “marks a profound and sorrowful chapter in history, one that for ever changed the lives of so many around the world”.
“We stand together to reflect not only on the lives lost but also on the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of such unimaginable adversity,” it added.
“As we remember their lives today, let us also extend our thoughts to all who were affected by the events of September 11, ensuring that the lessons of unity, courage and compassion endure in our hearts.”
Students and staff placed a wreath under a tree at the school to honour Mr Gatton and Mr Higley.
Warwick Academy held its own ceremony in memory of Ms Tankard, who was working for Aon in the US when she died in the South Tower of the World Trade Centre.
A spokeswoman for the school said: “Every year, Warwick Academy ensures that her memory lives on with the 9/11 memorial ceremony today and the Rhondelle Tankard music concert we hold in the spring.
“The school’s dedication to honouring her legacy reflects not only Rhondelle’s impact on the school community but also the importance of resilience, reflection and unity.
“Warwick Academy remains committed to ensuring that Rhondelle and all those affected are never forgotten.”
