BNG launches first junior biennial exhibition
Young artists have been invited to submit their work for the first Bermuda National Gallery Junior Bermuda Biennial exhibition, which will be held in November.
A BNG spokeswoman said that, like its adult counterpart, the junior show will be an open submission and internationally juried exhibition, offering participants the opportunity to display their work without restrictions on size, style, medium or theme.
It will also provide the island’s youngest artists with a national platform to showcase their talents in a professional gallery setting.
The spokeswoman added: “This open format encourages creativity and innovation, allowing Bermuda’s youngest artists to express themselves freely and push the boundaries of their creativity.”
The show will be judged by Molly Bretton, who is the head of learning at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
Ms Bretton champions the importance of art in education and was instrumental in establishing the Royal Academy’s Young Artists Summer Show.
She will be selecting the artworks based on originality, unique imagination and technical skill.
Eve Godet Thomas, BNG’s director of exhibitions, said: “Having seen the impact that inclusion in the Bermuda Biennial has had on the careers of so many of both our emerging and established artists, BNG is proud to provide our youngest creatives with a national platform from which they can share their talent, creativity and unique view of the world.
“Application is free and all artists aged 5 to 17, along with their guardians or teachers, are invited to submit up to three artworks.
“This can be anything made in the past two years — from photography to painting, textiles, sculpture or film. The only limit is your imagination. Surprise us.”
All applicants will receive a certificate of participation. Because the show is juried, not all submissions will be selected for inclusion in the final exhibition.
Submissions must be made online by September 29. Tips on applying, and how to photograph artwork, can be found at www.bng.bm. There is no application fee.
