Police standards body launches review into Cup Match arrest
A police review has been launched after a professional golfer complained about being arrested during an altercation at Cup Match.
Nick Jones filed a formal complaint with the Bermuda Police Service’s Professional Standards Department about his treatment by police after he claimed to have been the victim of an assault by a member of the public at Somerset Cricket Club during the second day of the game.
Police said that Mr Jones and another man were arrested for breach of the peace. They also confirmed that the PSD had launched a review into the matter and that the Police Complaints Authority had been notified.
Mr Jones told The Royal Gazette that he was at the grounds when he saw a friend who said he had just been assaulted. Mr Jones said he approached the man who allegedly hit his friend, but as he did so, the man then struck him in the face.
Mr Jones said to his surprise, he was then arrested along with the alleged perpetrator of the assault.
They were both detained in their own separate cells overnight and released without charge.
Mr Jones said when he was struck, he recoiled, not wanting the situation to escalate.
He said: “Before I knew it, I was being escorted down the stairs away from the celebration.”
He admitted swearing in frustration, adding: “I hadn’t touched anyone, yet here I was being handcuffed and detained.”
He claimed not to know why he was being arrested.
A spokesman for the BPS told the Gazette that at about 4.30pm on August 2, officers responded to a report of an assault involving four locals on the third level of the stands.
The spokesman said: “It is understood that a 49-year-old man became verbally and physically aggressive towards a 21-year-old woman.
“The woman’s father, a 46-year-old man, then intervened and was allegedly assaulted by the older man.
“It appears that a fourth individual, said to be a 34-year-old man, also got involved.
“As a result, the 49-year-old man and the 34-year-old man were arrested for breach of the peace.
“Both were later released from BPS custody without further action as seemingly no one involved wished to make the relevant report to pursue criminal charges regarding any alleged assault at that time.
“However, should anyone involved in this incident now decide to make a report of assault, it will be investigated.
“The BPS Professional Standards Department has since received a formal complaint from the 34-year-old man, which is under PSD review, in relation to his arrest and time spent in police custody.
“Appropriately, the Police Complaints Authority has already been notified about this matter.”
