New lawyer brings ‘intellect, dedication and legal acumen’
A new lawyer was welcomed to the Bermuda Bar on Friday in a ceremony before Chief Justice Larry Mussenden.
Ryley Tannock was announced by the firm Appleby, where he is in his second year of its legal trainee programme.
The firm praised him as a first-class candidate, noting that Mr Tannock recently began his final seat lasting 12 months in the dispute resolution department under the continued mentorship of James Batten.
Mr Tannock completed both the graduate diploma of law and the legal practice course at The University of Law.
He obtained a bachelor of arts degree from Saint Mary’s University in Canada with a double major in criminology and psychology.
Mr Tannock, who won the 2022 Appleby legal education scholarship, interned with the firm that same year and began his pupillage in September 2023.
In his first year of the programme, Mr Tannock completed three four-month seats, in the insurance, corporate and dispute resolution departments, where he was mentored by Josephine Noddings, counsel, Jane Walker, senior associate, and Mr Batten, also counsel, respectively.
Mr Tannock said: “After a long journey, I am honoured and humbled to be welcomed into the fraternity that is the Bermuda Bar.
“I have learnt from individuals at all levels of the totem pole and I take all their advice and remarks in stride.”
He said he was “deeply grateful for every person and organisation who has had a part in this journey, bringing me to where I am today, and for every opportunity that has been placed before me”.
“In this new era, I look forward to continued growth as an individual and a professional and to serving the community of Bermuda in a most esteemed manner.”
Mr Batten said Appleby was “thrilled to congratulate Ryley on his Call to the Bar”.
He said Mr Tannock’s “exceptional intellect, dedication and legal acumen” already marked him as “an outstanding addition to his chosen profession”.
“The skills and knowledge that Ryley has demonstrated will undoubtedly serve him well throughout his career.
“We are proud to have him as an integral part of Appleby’s growing team and look forward to watching him continue to flourish in the years ahead.”
John Wasty, the head of Appleby’s dispute resolution practice in Bermuda, where Mr Tannock continues to be mentored, said: “Ryley is a fabulous addition to the Appleby team and Bermuda’s legal community.
“He cares about the law and the practice of law. He cares about delivering first-class service to our outstanding clients. He cares about his colleagues.
“He has an unwavering focus on identifying and implementing solutions, which makes him a superb addition to our growing dispute resolution team.”
He added: “I congratulate Ryley on his Call to the Bermuda Bar and look forward to working with him and seeing him develop into an excellent lawyer at Appleby.”
