Schoolchildren were invited to participate in a photography competition that challenges them to capture Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment.

The Dr Reg Grundy Youth Photography Competition has been renamed Your Eyes on Bermuda: The Grundy Youth Photography Competition, with the passing of the late media mogul’s wife, Joy, last year.

This year’s competition honours them both.

Now in its sixth year, the contest was launched in memory of Dr Grundy, an Australian and Bermuda resident who was a key figure in international television production and distribution.

The National Museum of Bermuda is hosting the competition, which welcomes primary [aged 7 to 10], middle [11 to 14] and high school [15 to 18] pupils to enter.

Categories are People of Bermuda, Bermuda Buildings and Bermuda Wildlife and Nature. Only one photograph per category is permitted.

Elena Strong, the museum’s executive director, said: “We are so thankful to the late Mrs Joy Grundy and her dedicated team

“Each year, we are increasingly amazed by the growing number and exceptional quality of student submissions.

“This competition offers students a unique opportunity to cultivate their creativity, patience and visual literacy, encouraging them to see and interpret the world in new and meaningful ways.

“We can’t wait to witness the incredible entries for this year’s event.”

Ms Strong also thanked the local sponsors of the competition AF Smith, Clarien Bank and the Phoenix Stores.

Winning entries will be displayed in Commissioner’s House at the museum and published in MARITimes, NMB’s annual magazine, as well as the on the National Museum of Bermuda and Reg Grundy Wildlife websites.

This year’s judges are Deborah Atwood, a museum curator, Chinni Mahadevan, a Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries curator, and Lisa Howie, the founder of Black Pony Gallery, cofounder of Atlantic Arthouse and an education consultant at the museum.

Prizes include Iron Kids accounts at Clarien Bank and gift certificates at Phoenix Stores.

The Best in Show will win a Canon DSLR camera with lenses, a memory card, filters and a carrying case.

In addition to individual prizes, the school with the most submissions, based on percentage, will receive a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith.

The deadline for submissions for ages 7 to 10 is October 29; 11 to 14 is October 30; 15 to 18 is October 31.

Details are available and submissions must be made online at www.nmb.bm/RG-photo-competition. An awards ceremony will be held on December 5.
