Campaign launches to address food insecurity and hunger
A community group has launched a new campaign dedicated to fight hunger, food insecurity and nutritional inequity in Bermuda.
The #FoodForLife campaign, put together by Bermuda is Love, was designed to promote the creation of “sustainable and holistic” food practices on the island.
A spokesman for the group said: “Food insecurity remains a globally critical issue and is extremely impactful locally on many individuals and families in Bermuda, where many in our community are presently forced to choose between paying for basic necessities such as rent and healthcare, and accessing good-quality healthy food.
“The cumulative impact these interrelated issues have on driving Bermudians deeper into the cycle of poverty is a state of socioeconomic degradation that we cannot leave unaddressed.
“The #FoodForLife campaign seeks to raise awareness about the severity of this problem and to mobilise our local community resources to provide meals and food security to those in need.”
Throughout October, the organisation will host a series of workshops and educational events as part of the campaign, which launched on Sunday with a Wild Herbs Tour in St David’s.
The campaign continues this Saturday with a Food Security Workshop, to be held from 10am to noon at Black Circle on Union Street.
The following day, Food Forest on Middle Road in Sandys will host a composting workshop from 10am to noon.
Campaigners are scheduled to volunteer at the First Baptist Church’s Feeding Programme on October 16 and the Christ Church Warwick Feeding Programme on October 19.
Events will continue on October 20 with a Food Justice Forum from 3.30pm to 6pm at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s Tradewinds Auditorium and a potluck dinner between 5pm and 8pm on October 26 at Admiralty House.
The final campaign event will take place on October 27 with a community garden event between 10am and noon at the former TN Tatem Middle School in Warwick.
“In addition to addressing acute hunger, the #FoodForLife campaign emphasises the critical importance of sustainable food system practices,” the spokesman said.
“The campaign will host workshops and educational events to teach our community about the importance of nutrition, circular food economy systems and sustainable farming and food production methods.
“Through promoting these future-focused practices, we can create a healthier population and a more resilient food system for both present and future generations in Bermuda.”
