Minister urges community collaboration on fire safety
The community’s collective responsibility to safeguard homes and neighbours has been highlighted for the launch of Fire Safety Awareness Week.
Members of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service attended a proclamation for the global event on the steps of City Hall this morning.
Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, thanked firefighters and told them: “Your dedication and bravery are essential to our island’s security.”
He added: “Fire Safety Awareness Week is not just a series of events on a calendar.
“It is a crucial reminder of the responsibility we all share in safeguarding our homes, our loved ones and our beautiful island.
“As the Minister of National Security, I am acutely aware of the challenges we face in ensuring the safety of citizens.
“Fire safety is a collective effort that extends beyond the expertise of our fire professionals. It involved each one of us taking proactive steps to prevent incidents before they occur.
“This week provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we can contribute to safer homes, workplaces and our environment.”
Mr Weeks encouraged the community to engage in events and activities hosted by the BFRS throughout the week, including workshops and demonstrations.
Dana Lovell, the Chief Fire Officer for the BFRS, said that this year’s theme was Smoke Alarms: Make them Work for You.
He emphasised the need for members of the community to educate, inform and empower each other in a collective effort to improve fire safety.
He added: “It only takes a single spark to change our lives for ever.”
