Volunteers sought to sit on human rights tribunal panel
The Human Rights Commission is seeking a pool of up to 15 volunteers to sit on a tribunal panel from which members are drawn to adjudicate on human rights complaints.
Independent bodies are empanelled to resolve complaints of alleged discrimination in a fair, impartial and timely manner.
Seth Darrell, of the Selection and Appointment Committee responsible for making panel appointments, said: “The work of the Human Rights Tribunal, and of human rights defenders more broadly, is essential to equity, justice, fairness, respect and dignity for all.”
He said that the SAC wanted to attract a diverse group of people reflective of the community who will “foster greater public confidence in the integrity, independence, impartiality and effectiveness that the Human Rights Tribunal panel ought to possess”.
Mr Darrell added: “The SAC believes that this is both a tremendous opportunity and a tremendous responsibility for persons to meaningfully steer the protection and promotion of human rights.”
The SAC said it was seeking applicants who have experience, interest or knowledge of human rights law, with sufficient availability to adjudicate proceedings, which may require three to five full days to complete.
An ability to draft tribunal decisions at the conclusion of a matter was also preferred.
Applications must be submitted by 3pm on Friday, November 8.
