Spirit of Bermuda returns from inspection in Canada
An iconic Bermudian vessel was expected to reach the island this morning after sailing from Canada.
Spirit of Bermuda left the Lunenburg Shipyard in Nova Scotia on Thursday after undergoing a ten week-long inspection and safety certification.
She travelled to Bermuda through the Gulf Stream and has been certified by the American Bureau of Shipping, which will last for another five years.
Spirit was manned by Captain Paul Bracken, First Officer Patrick Perret, Second Officer Dkembe Outerbridge-Dill, Jamila Hanley and Mtume Hart, the vessel’s watch leaders, David Goulbourne, an engineer, and Mary Ellison the catering officer.
Her return comes after the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, which looks after the vessel, announced that she may be sold if they were unable to weather financial troubles.
The group ended Spirit’s five-day residential voyages after June 30 because of economic constraints.
The BSF said last week that the vessel’s ABS certification was a necessity made possible thanks to “generous donations from loyal supporters”.
