The Department of Public Transportation has warned the public to be wary of a scam spreading on social media promising a discounted three-month smart pass.

A spokeswoman said: “Please be aware that this is a scam, not a promotion by the Department of Public Transportation or the Government of Bermuda.

“The department is urging customers not to click on the link in the caption, as it may lead to personal data theft or financial fraud.

“The Bermuda Police Service have been notified regarding the post.”

One false advertisement claimed that 500 smart cards, offering unlimited bus and ferry use for three months for $2.55, were being offered by the Government as part of an “initiative to enhance island mobility and promote public transport”.

The scam directed victims to sign on to a non-government website and fill out a survey to receive the fake discounted smart pass.
