Sri Lankan association cleans up care home
Members of Bermuda’s Sri Lankan community weathered rain showers last weekend to help clean up a care home in the East End.
About 40 members of the Sri Lankan Association of Bermuda attended the Sylvia Richardson Care Facility on Sunday to clear away plant debris and remove dangerous tree branches.
Chefs with the group later helped to prepare Sri Lankan meals for the residents and staff.
Tracy Moore, the activities co-ordinator for Sylvia Richardson, helped to arrange a meeting between association management and the care home to see what services could be completed.
Volunteers were assisted by Steven Douglas, the groundskeeper for the St George’s seniors home, who instructed them on how best to help out and ensured their safety.
Members of association who cooked professionally were directed by Ereka Gift, the dietary services supervisor of Sylvia Richardson, to provide lunch.
Ms Gift said: “The residents and staff thoroughly enjoyed their lunch.
“They were very pleased, and the volunteers did a very good job.
“We greatly appreciate it.”
A spokesman for the association said that members volunteered annually across the island to give back to “this beautiful country”.
He added that “Bermuda has done so much for the community” that the association wanted to show thanks.
The spokesman said that last year the association hosted a cleaning effort at Fort Victoria in St George’s.
