Cruise ship turns to Bermuda for ill crew member
A Florida-bound cruise ship made an unscheduled detour to the island over the weekend to help an ill crew member.
On Saturday afternoon, RCC Bermuda was contacted by the shipping agent for the Norwegian Epic, which was en route from the Azores to Port Canaveral.
An incident report explained that the shipping agent said the vessel sought to divert to Bermuda to disembark a crew member suffering from suspected appendicitis.
“The crew member, escorted by a member of the ship’s medical team, disembarked on to the pilot/rescue boat St David to be transported to an ambulance waiting at Ordnance Island, St George,” the report said.
“The ship continued its passage to Port Canaveral.”
The incident was one of several recorded late last week.
On Friday, the Bermuda Coastguard received an e-mail from a family member of a sailor who had set out to travel solo to the island from Nova Scotia on October 17.
At the time the boat, the Eleutheros, was still 240 miles north of the island.
“There was some concern as the vessel is only 33ft in length, made of wood and not fitted with an engine,” the incident report said.
“Direct contact was made with the single-handed sailor via their Garmin device and regular position information was received.”
The Eleutheros arrived safely in St George’s Harbour on Monday without incident.
On Saturday evening, Bermuda Radio was contacted about a 30ft pleasure craft that had run aground near Paradise Lakes with six people on board.
“Two coastguard vessels attended and transported all on board to Barrs Bay as the boat was hard aground,” the report said.
“The boat was refloated at high water the following morning and returned to the dinghy club without further incident.”
