The Ministry of Economy and Labour has released an updated compendium of environmental statistics covering everything from rainfall to visitor arrivals.

The 2023 Environmental Statistics Compendium, produced by the Department of Statistics, is broken up into 13 sections including population, environmental health, energy use, land use and waste generation.

A ministry spokesman said: “More than 40 statistical tables provide a wealth of data about Bermuda's environmental conditions.

“This publication is an excellent tool for research, school projects and promoting awareness about issues affecting Bermuda's environment.”

The figures focus on the period leading up to and including 2022.

The compendium notes total energy consumption had risen from 522.6 million kilowatt hours in 2021 to 524.2 million kilowatt hours in 2022, while waste production fell from 73,200 metric tonnes to 71,200 metric tonnes in the same period.

A total 72 million cubic meters of rain were estimated to have fallen on the island in 2022, a 4.8 per cent decrease year-on-year.

Fishing statistics highlighted that while tuna and other pelagic fish remained the most popular catch, groupers saw the largest year-on-year increase in fish landings.

Meanwhile, tourism figures showed visitors to Bermuda increased from 86,356 in 2021 to 548,522 in 2022 as the tourism industry bounced back in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
