Land management quango launched

A new government quango to oversee “sustainable solutions” for land development and management on the island has been launched.

The Bermuda Land Management Corporation, an amalgamation of the Bermuda Land Development Company and the West End Development Corporation, will also allow the new entity to strategically streamline operations, a spokeswoman said.

Andrew Dias, chief executive of the BLMC, said: “We’re excited to bring together the strengths of both organisations to better serve our community.

“This is about maximising our resources and enhancing our ability to manage our lands efficiently, ultimately benefiting everyone in Bermuda.”

The body is headquartered on the second floor of the Clocktower Mall in Dockyard.

Another office has been established at 5 Waller’s Point Road in St George’s to ensure the organisation is accessible to all, the spokeswoman said.

In July, Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, told the House of Assembly that the Government had reviewed past reports, including the Spending and Government Efficiency report of 2013, recommending “the consolidation of government quangos that share similar functions”.

Colonel Burch said the Regulatory Authority had approved transferring the communications licence held by the BLDC to the BLMC, adding that the new entity would not require planning permission to subdivide properties.

The oversight of the legislature would remain unchanged, and no redundancies were expected from the merger, even though there would be nine fewer posts.

The amalgamation received broad support in the House from both sides of the aisle.
