Open day gives civilians a flavour of regiment training
Civilian visitors tested out life as a Royal Bermuda Regiment soldier at an open day last weekend.
The event on Saturday aimed to give attendees a glimpse into the opportunities offered by the organisation.
Major Dwight Robinson, the regiment career management officer, said it presented an opportunity to spark interest in the RBR.
He said: “The open day gave people a chance to experience what we do first-hand — touch it, feel it and smell it — without feeling obligated.
“There’s a soldier in everyone; it’s just about creating the right environment to draw that out and show them the possibilities.”
Attendees were given a tour of Warwick Camp and walked through the assault course.
They were also introduced to the regiment’s medics and communications teams.
Visitors were then taken to the RBR Coastguard base at Scenic House in Sandys, where they learnt about maritime operations and took a trip on board one of the unit’s vessels.
The event was rounded out with a visit to Government House on Langton Hill in Pembroke, where attendees took part in a security-focused training exercise.
Corporal Joliza Vanderpool said: “The open day was about bringing civilians into the regiment to see how we operate and discover what might pique their interest in our various departments.
“It’s an opportunity to show how joining the RBR can help people grow in different areas and transfer those skills to their civilian lives.”
She also encouraged people to join the next open day on November 30.
Corporal Vanderpool said: “Even if you’re unsure or feel that you don’t have the qualities of a soldier, come along.
“See what we’re about and you might discover that everyone has a soldier within them.”
