Christmas parade heralds the start of the holiday season
Sleigh bells and Santas were on display in Hamilton tonight as the island heralded in the holiday season on the first day of December.
Thousands of spectators flocked to the centre of the island’s capital to witness a parade of brightly coloured floats snaking through the city.
The event, organised by grocery chain MarketPlace, has become a major attraction in recent years, coinciding with the lighting of City Hall’s Christmas Tree, which took place on Friday.
Balmy weather drew in the crowds for the light show, which culminated in one of the first fireworks displays held on island in many a year.
Earlier, Seth Stutzman, president of The MarketPlace group of companies, explained that the purpose of the event was to bring the community together.
Mr Stutzman said: “We’re counting down the hours to this magical evening that brings our community together.
“Our team has been working diligently with the City of Hamilton and the Bermuda Police Service to ensure this celebration is spectacular for everyone attending.
“This parade represents more than just a celebration — it’s our way of giving back to the community that supports us throughout the year.
“We’re particularly proud to showcase local talent and businesses, including our partners at Swan Pyrotechnics, who will create an unforgettable fireworks display.”
The feeling of unity — of young and old joining in a celebration of togetherness — was exemplified by attendees who spoke to The Royal Gazette.
Roneka Hall, 28, was watching the parade on Church Street with her 18-month old son, Rome.
“I’m not sure he understands what’s going on just yet,” Ms Hall said.
“But it’s been a lovely night out — both lovely and lively. We’re having a great time.
“It’s been really well put together. Everything’s open and it seems like the whole of the island has come together.”
That sentiment was echoed by 77-year-old Shahidah, who did not want to give her surname.
She said: “It’s just good, clean fun. No gangs, no drunkenness — just everyone coming together.”
The parade of floats began its route from Church Street, before turning on to Court Street, Front Street and Queen Street.
Pembroke resident Debra Wilson had a ringside seat.
She said: “It’s just one of those events where everybody comes together.”
