Event to celebrate people with disabilities

The rights, wellbeing and inclusion of people with disabilities are to be highlighted at an event tomorrow.

Leaders with disabilities, representatives from disability-related organisations and information booths will feature at the gathering from noon to 2pm at City Hall.

The event will mark the UN’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors said.

This year’s observance is being held under the theme “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”.

Residents will have an opportunity to add their information to the Bermuda Disability Register.

The global observance, which was established in 1992, highlights the importance of the promotion of leadership of persons with disabilities in all areas of life, a ministry spokeswoman said.

It also places the spotlight on ensuring inclusion in social, cultural, economic and political sectors, increasing participation in decision-making processes and raising awareness of rights and achievements.

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors said: “The UN International Day for Persons with Disabilities reminds us of the remarkable contributions made by persons with disabilities here in Bermuda and around the world.

“As we celebrate their leadership and amplify their voices, we encourage everyone to attend and learn more about the critical work being done locally and globally to build an inclusive and sustainable future.”
