Bermuda Legion gifts hampers to war veterans
The Bermuda Legion offered some Christmas cheer yesterday when it shared hampers with members of the veteran community residing at a care home in Pembroke.
Carol Everson, welfare case worker at the charity, said the annual exercise was a regular part of her Christmas calendar.
The donations at Westmeath Residential and Care Home was her second of 45 such stops around the island.
Ms Everson said: “All of the gifts that we are taking around the island have been made possible by the poppy appeal in November.
“We have a duty of care for all our war veterans and widows, and we provide grants and we also look after any of their needs.
“In addition to them, we have also added the serving soldiers, so we have a very big community.”
Jennifer Nisbett, director of nursing at the care home, thanked the legion for the donations, which consisted of toiletries and dry foods, among other items.
She said the charity provided support to residents at the home throughout the year.
Ms Nisbett added: “They’ve provided electric beds, wheelchairs, gifts and they would also invite them to the luncheon following the veterans’ parade in November.”
She said Ms Everson kept in touch regularly with the care home to check on the needs of its veterans and widows of veterans in residence.
Douglas Clark, Gloria Stines, Winifred Oatley and Jennifer Watlington, of the veteran community, were also on hand when the charity handed over the hampers.
