Human rights highlighted ahead of global commemoration
The community has been urged to continue advocating for the rights of all.
The Bermuda Human Rights Commission issued the call as the global community observes Human Rights Day tomorrow.
Lisa Reed, executive officer of the HRC, stated: “The Human Rights Commission’s mission is to promote and protect human rights through education, collaboration, advocacy and enforcement.
“This annual day of recognition provides an important opportunity to reflect on our obligations, and our shared responsibility to ensure human rights are respected, protected and extended to all.
“Human rights belong to every person and upholding these rights is integral to creating a society where dignity, equality and fairness are prioritised.”
Core principles outlined by the Human Rights Commission include:
• Recognition and respect for the dignity and worth of all individuals
• Legal guidelines and obligations that promote equality and ensure adequate standards of living
• Standards to identify and measure equality, access and fairness
• The foundational rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
• Anyone who has experienced a human rights violation or may have questions can visit the office of the HRC, call 295-5859 or e-mail info@humanrights.bm
