The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has launched an education drive ahead of the full implementation of privacy legislation in the new year.

The Know Your Rights campaign was designed to help people and provide tips related to the Personal Information Protection Act 2016, which will take effect on January 1.

Staff will meet the public at The MarketPlace grocery stores in the City of Hamilton, Heron Bay, Somerset and Shelly Bay tomorrow, from 10am to noon, where they will distribute flyers and take suggestions for future engagements.

A flyer will also be sent to households across the island this month.

Flyer information

• Understanding the rights of individuals under the Personal Information Protection Act 2016

• Insight into organisations’ obligations and responsibility for use of personal information under Pipa

• How to report situations where you suspect your privacy rights have not been upheld

Angie Farquharson, the Acting Privacy Commissioner, said: “Privacy is a fundamental right, and in the era of digital technology, it is critical for individuals to know how to protect their personal information.

“This campaign is designed to make privacy rights information accessible in order to empower individuals to be in control of their own personal information.”
