The Department of Corrections is to host a public information session on Thursday as part of a recruitment drive.

The event at the Athene Lecture Theatre at Bermuda College will run from 6pm to 7.30pm.

A government spokesman said the event provides an opportunity for residents to learn more about the vital role of corrections officers in ensuring Bermuda’s security.

He said participants will gain insight into the position, the rewards and benefits of a career in corrections, and the opportunities for training, growth and professional development within the department.

The department’s recruitment drive runs until December 31.

A Department of Corrections spokesman said: “This is more than just a job. Corrections officers play an essential role in safeguarding our community and making Bermuda a safer place for everyone.

“We encourage anyone with questions or even a slight interest in this career path to attend the session in a welcoming, pressure-free environment.”

The department emphasised the importance of creating pathways for personal and professional growth.

The event on Thursday will provide a platform for potential applicants to explore these opportunities and ask questions directly, the government spokesman said.

The Royal Gazette reported on Monday that the department was about 100 officers short, with approximately 146, while its staffing schedule calls for 244.

Timothy Seon, the chairman of the Prison Officers Association, said the shortage led to officer burnout, while programmes for prisoners, including those deemed mandatory for violent and sexual offenders, were run inconsistently if at all.
