The Anglican Church of Bermuda has announced four new appointments in the diocese.

A statement posted on its website said that the Reverend Thomas Nisbett Jr will be the priest-in-charge for St Peter’s Church in St George's and the Chapel of Ease in St David’s after Easter Sunday.

Mr Nisbett — son of the late Reverend Canon Thomas Nisbett Sr, Bermuda’s first Black Anglican priest — ministered and served on the task force for racial justice in the diocese of Fredericton, New Brunswick in Canada.

The statement said that Mr Nisbett spent some of his formative years in St George’s when his father was an associate minister at the Chapel of Ease, “with very fond memories of living in that tight-knit community”.

The Reverend Carl Williams will be the priest-in-charge of St Mary the Virgin Church in Warwick.

“With the overwhelming support of both the selection committee and the vestry of the parish, this announcement made on Sunday was accompanied by a round of applause by the members of the church,” the statement said.

Mr Williams, a native of Barbados, has Bermuda status through marriage and his wife, Melinda, grew up in the St Mary’s community.

The statement said: “In the new year, they will be living in the rectory in order to be present and available for the ongoing growth of the ministry in Warwick.”

Mr Williams is expected to start his work as priest-in-charge from Sunday, but owing to the “pressures of the season”, his formal service of installation will be on January 8 at 7pm.

He returned to Bermuda after leaving a post in Trinidad & Tobago in 2017 – nine years after being dismissed from St Anne’s church in Southampton.

His licence to serve in Bermuda was restored last year.

The Anglican Church statement said the latest appointment of Mr Williams, who is also part of the synod standing committee and chairman of the racial committee of the synod, showed “continued commitment to the eradication of racial prejudice and discrimination in our community and for our leadership to better reflect the community they serve”.

Lawyer Audley Quallo was appointed as registrar for the diocese on December 11.

Mr Quallo, who was called to the Bermuda Bar in July, will work with Robert Alexander, the chancellor of the diocese, and advise the bishop, other staff and church committees on legal matters.

The statement added that Wendy Harvey has been hired as the Anglican Bishop’s executive assistant.

It said: “With her warmth of personality, servant-hearted demeanour and wealth of experience, she brings stability and keen administrative skills to the hub of the Anglican Church.”
