The island’s only child sexual abuse prevention charity is celebrating a Christmas gift after a charity golf tournament raised $10,000 for the cause.

The Mid Ocean Club Ladies’ Golf Group made the donation to Saving Children and Revealing Secrets after its annual tournament and lunch on Tuesday.

Debi Ray-Rivers, the founder and executive director of Scars, said: “Every dollar will go towards our continued advocacy, education and awareness initiatives.”

She told the group: “Your generosity allows us to continue this crucial work in prevention so that every child in our community has an opportunity to grow up safe and protected.

“I am truly touched by the amount that was raised.”

Lisa Ferrari, the Mid Ocean Ladies’ captain, said that the annual Christmas tournament and lunch, which backs a different charity each year, stood as “a highlight of our golfing calendar, for the chance to get together and celebrate Christmas as a group and for the opportunity to make a difference to deserving local charities like Scars”.

She thanked the Mid Ocean Club, tournament organisers and all who donated.

Since 2010, the Mid Ocean ladies’ group has donated more than $60,000 to causes including Meals on Wheels, Friends of Hospice, Pals, the Foster Parents Association, Family Centre and The Salvation Army.
