Students offer home-grown produce to care home

The hard work of students in the Mirrors Programme have borne fruit, leading to a donation of home-grown produce to Summerhaven residents.

A government spokeswoman said that participants in the programme’s Field of Learning Garden Club offered an array of fruit and vegetables to the care facility last week.

Kimberley Jackson, programme manager, said the donation reflects Mirrors’ commitment to teaching young people valuable life skills while making a positive impact on the community.

“Through the Garden Club, students get hands-on experience growing vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers, while also learning important lessons about teamwork, responsibility and resilience,” Ms Jackson said.

“By donating their harvest to seniors and families in need, they also learn the joy of giving back and the power of community care.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our students and their accomplishments this term. Watching them grow, not just in their gardening skills but also in their confidence and compassion, has been a rewarding experience.”

Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, praised the hard work of the students as they closed out the term.

“These students have shown dedication and kindness, and their efforts to support our seniors and families in need is inspiring,” she said. “This initiative highlights the Mirrors Programme’s focus on leadership and social responsibility.”

Term 2 of the programme’s Field of Learning Garden Club for students aged 11 to 18 is scheduled to run from January 21 to March 27, with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4pm and sunset.
