Light at last for Railway Trail underpass

Lights out: darkness under South Road along the Railway Trail (Photograph by Val Sherwood)

A fan of the Railway Trail has applauded the return of lighting to a tunnel section of the popular National Park.

Singer and songwriter Val Sherwood contacted The Royal Gazette this week after reporting the outage in the Railway Trail’s tunnel in Paget “several times to no avail” during the past few months.

A day after questions went to the Department of Parks, the darkened section underneath South Road by the junction with Ardsheal Drive got repaired on Wednesday by a Department of Works and Engineering team.

The sheltered stretch of the trail, normally illuminated full time, is part of a section dear to Ms Sherwood, who not only lives near by and regularly walks or cycles through but also penned a song in tribute to the railway for her 2013 album Be Fabulous.

Ms Sherwood was also part of the trail’s restoration more than 40 years ago as a chartered surveyor, when she was assigned by the Government to be the main technical officer for the project.

She said: “The trail is now a major feature of our Bermuda tourism plan and the Government is keen to see us all moving and enjoying nature, so please let's keep it clean and safe.”

Ms Sherwood’s The Railway Song is posted on her website, along with a video by John Woolridge showcasing the history of Bermuda’s railroad.

“That was my first project,” Ms Sherwood said of the trail’s overhaul.

“I feel very strongly about parks and open spaces, and want to see them cared for.”
