Trash collectors work the weekend to catch up

Waste collection workers are out on the roads today collecting household trash in the wake of the Christmas holiday.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said that while as many as ten waste collection vehicles are usually on the road, three were out of service because of mechanical issues or repairs.

“Crews are prepared to work extended hours to manage this period of heavy collection, and this is subject to vehicle availability,” the spokesman said.

He added that waste not collected on Thursday or Friday would be picked up by this evening.

“If necessary, staff will return on Sunday to ensure that all waste from this weekend is collected before Monday morning,” he added.

“The ministry appreciates the public’s patience and understanding as efforts continue to resolve these issues and restore full collection services promptly.

“It should be noted that the Government has also invested in upgrading the fleet with four new vehicles on order and scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2025.”
