Women will have the opportunity to explore their writing skills and use storytelling as a healing method in a programme that will start next week.

The Women’s Resource Centre announced the start of the ten-week therapeutic series titled “What’s Your Story?”, beginning at 6pm on January 14.

Workshop spaces will be limited to ten participants who will take part from the WRC’s headquarters at Sofia House in Hamilton, at a cost of $150 per person.

The charity offered five sponsored spaces to ensure the registration fee is not a barrier to participation.

The series will be facilitated by Sloane Johnson, a self-published Bermudian author, who will guide participants through the process of self-expression through writing.

The WRC said: “Whether attendees are seasoned writers or just beginning their writing journey, this experience will help them find their voices and share their stories in meaningful ways.”

Juanae Crockwell, the charity’s executive director, said: “As we continue to expand our therapeutic programmes to provide holistic healing and support for women in Bermuda, we are excited to offer this writers’ workshop.

“Writing has immense therapeutic value — it helps us process our feelings, build confidence and own our stories, no matter the challenges we’ve faced.”

She added: “We are also thrilled to welcome Sloane Johnson as our facilitator.

“Her experience in self-publishing will inspire participants and empower many to realise their dream of becoming a published author.”

Ms Johnson said she felt honoured to facilitate the workshop and added: “Writing has been a lifeline for me, allowing me to navigate life’s challenges and celebrate its joys.”

She said: “Through this workshop, I hope to inspire participants to embrace their unique voices, confront their truths, and take bold steps towards sharing their stories with the world.”

Ms Johnson has authored five books, including Bitter Sweet, ‘Twas the Week Before Christmas: A Bermuda Tale, Love Is, and Unevenly Yoked.

Another work — Soul Searching — is scheduled for publication next month.

The WRC said Ms Johnson was expected to mentor participants on their writing journeys and provide guidance on the self-publishing process.

As a licensed restorative practitioner and trainer, the charity said she is passionate about creating safe and supportive spaces.

The WRC said: “She brings this same dedication to her women’s writing workshop, where participants are encouraged to creatively unpack their stories, heal through writing, and develop the confidence to share their voices with the world.”

Through traditional psychotherapy and counselling services, the charity said it offers a variety of community events and workshops to equip women with tools to effectively manage their mental and emotional health, recover from traumatic experiences, and redesign their lives.

The WRC said that research showed expressive writing can lead to significant physical and psychological health improvements, including reduced stress, enhanced immune function and greater emotional wellbeing.
