Hundreds of homes suffer power outages
Hundreds of homes in central and eastern parishes were without power last night as strong winds buffeted the island.
According to electricity supplier Belco, Hamilton Parish was the biggest casualty of the wintry weather, with almost 700 homes suffering a blackout.
The Belco outage map also showed that 607 properties in Smith’s were without power, along with 297 homes in Devonshire.
In total, 1,689 Belco customers were without electricity from about 8.30pm.
However, by midnight last night, Belco crews had been able to restore power to more than 95 per cent of those homes affected.
Today, Shelly Leman, Belco’s managing director, said that more outages are expected as the windy weather continues into next week.
She said: “Belco customers have been and are expected to continue to be impacted by wet and windy conditions that have been affecting the island for several days, with forecasts indicating these conditions will persist.
“These weather conditions have the potential to cause outages, particularly as heavy, wet vegetation comes into contact with our overhead network.
“For the last week, Belco crews have been responding to outages as quickly and safely as possible, though restoration work can only be carried out when weather conditions permit and wind gusts are at safe levels.
“Customers are also reminded to unplug sensitive electronics if they experience an outage and to give crews ample space to work safely in the event that restoration works are required.”
For up-to-date outage information, customers can view the company’s outage map on belco.bm or through social-media channels.
According to the Bermuda Weather Service, there will be a lull in the wintry weather into tomorrow, but strong winds, with gusts up to 40 knots, or 46mph, will pick up again tomorrow evening.
