Teen Haven overwhelmed by support

An appeal for winter items this week has exceeded a charity’s expectations.

Roxanne Christopher, the chairwoman of Teen Haven, used Facebook on Monday to ask for blankets and comforters to keep the organisation’s 24 residents warm over winter.

Hundreds of items were donated within two days to the charity that supports vulnerable women and their children.

Wendy Augustus, the organisation’s executive director, explained: “We had the basic necessities [before this appeal] of one blanket and a cover for each of our clients.

“We’ve been able to double up as best we can, but it has not been enough.

“The haven has been completely full since October, so what we may have doubled or tripled up because we had fewer residents in the past, we couldn’t do so.”

Ms Christopher said: “I did not even think we would fill the capacity of what we needed. I made my post on Facebook, and the floodgates opened.

“People were forwarding and sharing the posts with co-workers and family members, and Bermuda has shown up for us.

“I had no idea that it would go viral.

“I am humbled that the community trusts us to take care of the most vulnerable people in our community and trusts us by doing the best that they can to pay it forward and share the love.”

The charity now has more than enough blankets and comforters, but could use items such as heaters, pillows, shower curtains and Belco vouchers.

Ms Christopher added: “We are a community partner, so if there is something that we can help them with, lean on us.

“We all have a role to play; we can’t just sit back and complain how difficult life is and things are in our country.

“Everyone has a role to play and everyone in our small team here is committed to executing community service.”
