The Minister of National Security has offered his condolences to the friends and relatives of a man who died this week at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Southampton.

Michael Weeks said today: “I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred yesterday at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, resulting in the loss of a life.

“On behalf of the Ministry of National Security and the Government of Bermuda, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this profoundly difficult time.”

He added: “I would like to express our gratitude to the emergency responders who swiftly attended the scene and continue to support the ongoing investigation into this heartbreaking event.

“Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragedy and I urge the community to keep the family in their prayers as they navigate this period of sorrow and loss.”

Police confirmed the “sudden death” of a 36-year-old man yesterday after officers responded to an incident at the lighthouse at about 12.15pm.

The area was cordoned off and the scene was processed and reopened about three hours later.

The man has not yet been identified.

Martin Weekes, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, said an investigation into the circumstances was continuing.

He called for witnesses or members of the public with information to contact Pc John Outerbridge by calling 211, or e-mailing jrouterbridge@bps.bm.
