The Bermuda Police Service have formed a plan of action to make sure they are compliant with the Personal Information Protection Act 2016.

The legislation, which applies to every organisation that uses personal information in Bermuda, came into effect on January 1.

It applies to all situations where an individual’s personal information is used wholly or partly by automated means or where it forms part of a structured filing system.

In a statement, the BPS said they have completed a gap analysis which was designed to capture the state of the organisation in relation to Pipa.

It added: “The end result was the formulation of an action plan, with smaller projects designed to bridge the gap between our present state and the future landscape of the BPS when Pipa is fully implemented.”

A privacy officer was appointed to lead a team, which is responsible for progressing the organisation’s Pipa projects.

The programme includes staff awareness training, a review of existing information security polices and amendments to the organisation’s memoranda of understanding with third party vendors.
