The anniversary of the historic clash between police and workers dubbed the Belco riots will be marked on Sunday.

A statement said Anglican churches across the island will ring their bells for 60 seconds at 9am, symbolising 60 years since the Belco riots.

The conflict began with people advocating for fairer wages and treatment for Belco workers, and culminated in 17 police officers being injured on February 2, 1965.

Witnesses to the crisis will reflect on their experience at Devonshire Recreation Club starting at 4pm.

Representatives from the Progressive Labour Party, One Bermuda Alliance and Free Democratic Movement, as well as an independent candidate, will speak during the event.

Gene Steede, Joy T Barnum, Mitchelle “Live Wires” Trott and other artists will perform, with free food available.

The statement added: “This free event captures the essence of the light that eventually emerged in 1965, reflecting our community collaborative spirit.”
